jenniebellie: (SPN Boys Demon Blood/Hell)

So I’ve been thinking about this since the season three finale of SPN, and I’m sure other people have, but I come bearing sick visual aids *ev0l grin*

I am unsure whether to cut for spoilers or not, as it's been two weeks so COME ON catch up. So I'm gonna be anal and annoying and cut words which some people might consider spoilery, and I'll cut for length too.

OK Dean in hell? SO influenced by Clive Barker and his twisted twisted mind. I ADORE Barker, did my thesis on him – particularly his use of sex and violence in horror, but that’s beside the point. The guy can only be described as having a twisted and freakish mind, and I love him for it. I just wish he would get back to writing horror. GOOD horror, I should add.

ANYWAY, there’s just something that reminded me of Barker, specifically a trope he tends to use a lot – hell and chains.

His film Hellraiser was about sadomasochism – there’s a puzzle box that’s said when opened transports you to a place of ultimate pleasure, or something like that. But people’s definition of pleasure differs, and the box actually opens onto a hell dimension where pleasure is derived from pain through torture, fear and mutilation. Lovely right?

In the opening of the film, we see the character of Frank finally discovering how to ‘solve’ the puzzle box. But when it’s opened, the demons from that dimension (the Cenobites) come in, custom leather and mutilated bodies and all. Hooked chains come flying out of nowhere and dig into Frank’s flesh, hauling him up and suspending him. Now, the special effects are atrocious, and I’m sure if it’s re-made now it’ll be done much better, but it was the ‘80s and you get the gist.

Warning: contains crap special effects, fake blood, bad horror and gratuitious inclusion of Cenobites, so only press play if you want a terrible visual aid

Barker seems to have a thing for chains and hellish things, which can also be seen in his line of action figures he made with McFarlane Toys. I was going to add some pics in here of the figures, but they are seriously twisted and I thought I’d give those of you who have don’t like horror and ickity ick fucked-up shit the option of scarring yourselves for life and giving you nightmares. SO clicky the links and see the figures!

Clive Barker’s Tortured Souls
The figures of Agonistes, The Scythe-Meister, Talisac and Venal Anatomica utilise chains, hooks and suspension in some cases.

Clive Barker’s Tortured Souls 2
Here, Zain and Moribundi utilise the same.

Clive Barker’s The Infernal Parade
And here, to a lesser extent, Tom Requiem.

I know, they’re not exactly the same LOL, but these images are what I was thinking about when I saw Dean in chains and hooks, dangling in hell. Ruby wasn't exactly lying was she! Thought I’d share :D

I thought of the exact same video clip when I saw the season finale.

Hell - I've not read Barker in years and I still remember every twisted concept, every sick image he conjured up for fans of celluloid.

All that's needed now is for Pinhead to materialise as one of Dean's tormentors and the Barkian vision is complete.

It was so familiar wasn't it? I was like OMG BARKER!!!

He is one twisted individual and I thank him for it LOL I think his work got kitschy when it went to screen, but some of his short stories are just fantastic. Really stick with you, as do images like Hellraiser and those figures. They're apparently making another one of his short stories into a film so YAY BARKER!

BUAH HA HA I'd love to see that. Imagine Dean snarking it up with Pinhead himself. Damn, they better not touch him - that body is waaaaay to pretty to mutilate!

My favourite Barker book is 'The Imajika' ... and now that I think of it its been years since I read it ...

And Cabal is great - the monsters being the good guys - kind of like Lenore's troop of vamps that Gordon wouldn't let be.

God so much of his stuff just lasts doesn't it? My favourite are the Books of Blood. Never really read many short stories and then got my hands on that and WOW. I've heard that he prefers the second half of them - the last three volumes - but I prefer the first three. Stories like Son of Celluloid, The Midnight Meat Train, Dread just knock me dead. And give me the creeps LOL

I love that his horror is cathartic, in a way, to his characters. Even if they end up dying! I'm gonna have to read them again. They're something I can keep going back to and getting so much out of them. It's great to see another Barker fan!

I've been saying all along that Dean is now stuck in Hellraiser

I know right! Chains, pain and hell? It's gotta be Barker. That would be a crossover I'd read LOL *ponders*

Well the the pulled apart by meathooks are very Barker, as you illustrated. But I was just going "OMG, Clive!"

A couple of us have been bugging him (Clive) about writing an ep.

OMG seriously? Wow, that word was hard to spell with all my excitment there!! Have you been writing to him? God, I'll join you guys if you want help, for definite! EXCLAMATION POINTS FOR ALL!

He needs to get into horror again, and an SPN will just make my head explode. Kripke and Barker - twisted Evil Geniuses FTW.

In letters and email and when we see him (at cons and signings and stuff; he's pretty close to his fanbase) :) So, drop him a note for sure and just mention that you saw that he was a fan of the show and how great GREAT it'd be for him to write an ep.

He really does. Did you see Midnight Meat Train yet?

Oh wow yeah, I'll definitely do that! Does he get back to you guys about it? Has he reacted positively about SPN and about writing for it?

No I haven't seen it yet - it's out this summer right? At least, it hasn't been released here yet. Can't wait to see it - it was one of my favourite stories in BoB, love to see what they're done with it. I just hope that it doesn't go the way so many horror films recently have gone, particularly Lionsgate ones - all guts and no heart!

Holy cow *closes eyes*
I'm a huge fan of good horror, but those toys are scary as fuck! I mean, really, if I had those in my place I'd be looking at them all the time, so make sure they aren't coming alive - and, what's worse, after me. LOL! Totally "Chucky" what I just said, huh?! =P

Anyway, I'm afraid I know close to 0 about Clive Barker and his horror stories, but now that I've seen this post, I'm really interested!

And about the Dean situation... well, I don't know the guy (Clive) too much, but I can see some connections here, yeah... which makes me even sadder for Dean, because this? Worse way Hell can be like, IMO. *shudders*

*hugs you*

I know, they're really demented! I saw them years ago and it's crazy how something like that stays stuck in your brain - the minute I saw the chains I thought ewwwwwwww creepy Barker toys LMAO They are freaky as hell - I was gonna link pictures directly but *looks sheepish* I didn't want those scary pics on my computer HAHAHAHAHAHA funneh.

If you like good horror and your interest is piqued then I suggest Barker's Books of Blood - they're six small volumes of short stories, think they're sold as one volume or two omnibuses now. I'm partial to the first omnibus, some of the stories are just incredible. Such an imagination; stories that'll definitely stick with you. Unfortunately he didn't do too much horror after that, but that's his best work IMHO..sorry I tend to gush when it comes to Barker :D

Yeah, Barker really goes for your worst nightmare. His versions of hell and horror are just *shudders* not for the faint hearted! I'm so gunning for a Barker/SPN crossover LOL

Thanks for having a look in, hope you come to like Barker!

You know, right after I saw this post I went to the movie store to rent one of the Hellraiser movies. =P They only had two tho, and I got one called "Hellraiser - Inferno", and dude, NO WAY not to think about the Hell Dean is in. *shudders*

And those cenobites guys are aweful =S Specially the one without the legs that keeps on making this sound with his teeth as if he wants to bite you, you know? Jesus...

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for the heads up about this guy and his stories! *hugs you*

Ah ha, yeah that vid was tame - the special effects were shite, and I cut out the end of it as it wasn't pertinent. It's really gross. Grosser. Where his body comes back together from hell in a big pile of goo. Mmm hmmm tasty.

Yeah the hook thing? Ouchies! That was in a movie I saw recently. Fuck me, that's gotta hurt. And the behind the scenes for the SPN finale, with Jensen and the green screen? Actually looks worse with the hooks through him imo.

Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude I knoooooooooooooow it'ssssssssssssssssss horrrrrrrrrrrrrrible. there's spoilers buzzin' around, apparently about Dean's fate? But hell, I've gotten through three seasons without 'em so I'm damn well gonna keep it up for the summer!

Longest comment ever. Apologies.

The weird thing about suspension (is it called that?) is how eerily calm people look. At least the ones I've seen. I saw this woman with her skin stretched horribly, hanging from her chest and her legs, and she looked so calm. It must be a mind control power thing to be able to block out the pain or channel it or something.

I'm okay without that kind of power, thanks.

Yeah, I'll be spoiler free too. All the better for conversations with you, when we'd have wien and it would slip out and you would really have to hit me with a ciabatta or something. If we were in D&C. A very large chopstick in Wagamama. You'd find a weapon, I'm sure.

Well...it's what I call it. And I am God, therefore yes, yes it is called that. Well in some places it's used as a means of meditation or channel to God or something? I don't know all the ins and outs, but it's a way of getting through the pain and chanelling the zen beneath. And you get visions. Or some such. So yeah, like what you said! This may have come to me in a dream, so I want to look it up now...

Yes, there will be beating with bread-like products and utensils if you're not careful. Or indeed if I'm not careful. Imagine how the last time would have gone:

You "So when are we going to talk about Dean being in hell?"
Me "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa????" *bawls eyes out*

Date: 2008-05-30 08:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] niennah.livejournal.com
Well...it's what I call it.

Well obviously you are god, therefore you are right. But I was actually questioning myself, there, not you! Because I was mixed up in my words again and I couldn't remember if that was actually the term used.

Channeling the zen, huh? I'd be channeling the really loud screaming.

See you lat0rxz lady!

I'm glad SOMEONE recognises me deity.

BUAH HA HAAAAAAAA yes I'd say I'd very much be screaming too. Possibly babbling too. THE HOOKS THE HOOKS JESUS CHRIST WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

Wheeeeeeeeeee see you later darlin'! No wien tiem for me, but HUZZAH to noodley goodness :)

Sure thing, glad it gave you food for thought :D I love to spread the ooey gooey goodness that is Clive Barker *nods*

Thanks darling, I'm OK now - just really really needed to vent. It seems to be the time for things getting on top of me and I needed to get it out! Believe me, you wouldn't have wanted to talk to me then - I was so angry! But I shall email if I need you *smooches* Thanks hun
